All Hearing Loss Is Not Forever

“Sound waves enter the outer ear and travel through the ear canal. This causes the eardrum and tiny bones, called the hammer, anvil, and stirrup in the middle ear to vibrate. Then vibrations travel to the fluid in the cochlea where microscopic hairs send nerve signals to the brain so sound is understood. If any of these parts are damaged or pathways are blocked, it can cause hearing loss.”

Sometimes Hearing Loss Is Temporary

We all need some earwax inside our ears because it protects the ear canal against dirt and bacteria. But too much earwax can build up and harden. This type of blockage can affect hearing. You may have an earache, or you feel like your ear is clogged. A quick hearing test can reveal this type of blockage. Once removed, if that is the problem, the ability to hear once again could be there.

Medications

There are medications known to cause hearing loss as a possible side effect. Antibiotics and cancer drugs. Usually hearing is monitored during these treatments. Some hearing loss may be permanent.

Decrease the use of aspirin, NSAIDs, and acetaminophen because they can increase the risk of hearing loss. “In some cases, hearing-related side effects go away when you stop taking the medication”.

Chronic Disease

Chronic disease such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can be linked to some forms of hearing loss. Some cause harm by interrupting blood flow to the inner ear or the brain. Although they are not directly related to the ear they can cause temporary or even permanent hearing loss.

Tumors and Growths

Balance issues, facial numbness, and tinnitus ase some of the symptoms associated with a tumor. In some cases, removing the growth can restore hearing or help preserve some hearing.

Age

Hearing weakens as we grow older. Age-related hearing loss is caused by the progressive loss of inner-ear hair cells. This is a natural loss and there is no way to prevent this type of hearing loss. But with a digital hearing aid you can retain your sense of hearing.

In Conclusion

If you experiencing hearing problems don't put off finding out why. Wax build up can be removed. We recommend that you have a professional remove build up. If the wax has hardened you could do more damage.

No matter what the findings are, what is important is renewing the ability to listen, to undertand what is being said and to be a part of your world once again
