Do You Suspect A Loved One Has A Hearing Loss?

If you begin to suspect that a loved one is suffering from hearing loss you can observe and watch for certain signs to try to confirm what you suspect before approaching them.

Hearing loss at any age can be serious and even life-threatening to that person, as well as for others. Such as emergency warnings, tornado warnings, wind chill advisories, blizzard conditions approaching, and many more.

Drivers may not hear trains approaching, or emergency vehicles like fire trucks, or ambulances. Sometimes noise can confuse the driver or startle them enough to cause them to have an accident.

Then there are medical instructions that could change the amount of medication taken or test results that may require a decision to be made. Worse, they may not realize a medication has been replaced and take both.

In almost all cases the longer a hearing loss prevails, the faster the loss becomes. Without proper treatment, the muscles in the ear begin to deteriorate because they are not being used.

Keep in mind when approaching someone about hearing loss that it is hard for most individuals to accept and they could very well be in denial. Hoping somehow it is just a temporary problem.

But in reality, the best thing that can be done to slow the hearing loss down is to get a hearing assessment and treatment for the loss.

What To Look For:

They can't hear on the phone

Hearing on the phone - especially mobile devices - can be a challenge for all of us. With bad reception, the brain tends to fill in the gaps of conversation. With normal hearing, the brain can easily do this. But with hearing loss, it becomes a challenge. Voices may come across muffled and impossible to understand.

Watching TV with the volume loud

When someone close to you has trouble hearing, watching television or a movie together can become unpleasant due to the loudness of the volume. You may often need to repeat what the actors have just said.

They are exhausted after visiting someone or
   vice versa

If your loved one often seems tired after long conversations or visits It could be because they are straining to hear. When hearing loss is occurring, it takes a greater cognitive effort for someone to hear. This can leave them feeling tired.

Do they seem extra exhausted where heavy listening is required – such as at conferences – or in settings that are difficult to hear in, like grocery stores, malls, or after church services?

They become less social

They suddenly become a homebody from being a social butterfly. This is more common than you think. When it becomes hard to hear or a struggle to hear it's easier to withdraw from attending events or take no part in conversations.

Relationships become strained

It can be frustrating—for the person that can't hear, for their friends, for you and for other members of the family. When a family member or friend isn’t hearing at their best some people may feel burdened by the need to constantly repeat themselves or “translating” what others say.

Some may feel like they’re being ignored when it's just the person being unaware that they are talking to them. Or they may mistakenly think they are constantly being yelled at.  Hearing difficulties may be to blame.

Treatment depends on the severity
The First Step is to schedule a hearing test.
American Home Care Hearing offers free hearing exams or will even make free house calls.

For some, hearing may be possible with surgery or a hearing device. Lip-reading skills, written or printed text, and sign language may help with communication.

Who Has Hearing Loss?

What Are The First Sign Of hearing Loss?

'Most complain that people mumble or talk too fast. Hearing loss is often accompanied by tinnitus. A buildup of earwax, medication, exposure to loud sounds and hearing loss can all cause ringing in the ears, or tinnitus. The ringing might be constant or occasional, but it is often the first sign of hearing loss

Prevention

The following steps can help you prevent noise-induced hearing loss and avoid worsening of age-related hearing loss:
  • Have your hearing tested. Consider regular hearing tests if you work in a noisy environment. If you've lost some hearing, you can take steps to prevent further loss.
  • Protect your ears. Limiting the duration and intensity of your exposure to noise is the best protection. In the workplace, plastic earplugs or glycerin-filled earmuffs can help protect your ears from damaging noise.
  • Avoid recreational risks. Activities such as riding a snowmobile, hunting, using power tools or listening to rock concerts can damage your hearing over time. Wearing hearing protectors or taking breaks from the noise can protect your ears. Turning down the music volume is helpful too'.

All Hearing Loss Is Not Forever

“Sound waves enter the outer ear and travel through the ear canal. This causes the eardrum and tiny bones, called the hammer, anvil, and stirrup in the middle ear to vibrate. Then vibrations travel to the fluid in the cochlea where microscopic hairs send nerve signals to the brain so sound is understood. If any of these parts are damaged or pathways are blocked, it can cause hearing loss.”

Sometimes Hearing Loss Is Temporary

We all need some earwax inside our ears because it protects the ear canal against dirt and bacteria. But too much earwax can build up and harden. This type of blockage can affect hearing. You may have an earache, or you feel like your ear is clogged. A quick hearing test can reveal this type of blockage. Once removed, if that is the problem, the ability to hear once again could be there.

Medications

There are medications known to cause hearing loss as a possible side effect. Antibiotics and cancer drugs. Usually hearing is monitored during these treatments. Some hearing loss may be permanent.

Decrease the use of aspirin, NSAIDs, and acetaminophen because they can increase the risk of hearing loss. “In some cases, hearing-related side effects go away when you stop taking the medication”.

Chronic Disease

Chronic disease such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can be linked to some forms of hearing loss. Some cause harm by interrupting blood flow to the inner ear or the brain. Although they are not directly related to the ear they can cause temporary or even permanent hearing loss.

Tumors and Growths

Balance issues, facial numbness, and tinnitus ase some of the symptoms associated with a tumor. In some cases, removing the growth can restore hearing or help preserve some hearing.

Age

Hearing weakens as we grow older. Age-related hearing loss is caused by the progressive loss of inner-ear hair cells. This is a natural loss and there is no way to prevent this type of hearing loss. But with a digital hearing aid you can retain your sense of hearing.

In Conclusion

If you experiencing hearing problems don't put off finding out why. Wax build up can be removed. We recommend that you have a professional remove build up. If the wax has hardened you could do more damage.

No matter what the findings are, what is important is renewing the ability to listen, to undertand what is being said and to be a part of your world once again

American Home Care Hearing offers Free hearing evaluations. This can be done at our office, your home and even at your office.

Listening To The Sounds Of Your Life

"Blindness Separates Us FromThings
But ...
Deafness Separates Us From People"
~ Helen Keller

“In 2005, I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes in which you feel as if you're spinning (vertigo), fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear. There is no cure for Meniere’s. It is a journey with a progressive and ultimately permanent loss of hearing.”
~ Micky Gramlin

Luckily, I was referred to Kelly, at American Home Care Hearing in Greenwood, Indiana. First, she did another hearing exam to verify the first exam and because of the way Meniere’s makes your hearing fluctuate. She explained she wanted a comparison to get the best fit for me on hearing aids.

Thirteen years later, experiencing a 50% loss, Kelly is still personally taking care of my hearing problems and is just as dedicated as ever to helping people “hear” the sounds of their lives. The laughter that surrounds them, the tiny voices of their grandchildren, to be able to participate in conversations with their friends and family and so much more.

There are other important matters where hearing is important. Such as understanding what the doctor is saying to you. When meeting with your lawyer. If you should fly, you must understand what to do if an emergency occurs. Other lives may depend on your actions and could be at risk if you should get something wrong.

A good example, someone says,”Don’t shoot!” But all you heard was, “Shoot!” As you can see, you want to get it right.

Kelly and her hearing aid business has been serving the Greenwood community for 25 years. Hearing exams are always free. Kelly, because of low overhead cost, can sell a set of aids much lower than her competitors. Well known names such as Starkey, Unitron and Resound to name some.

Not only is she my hearing specialist, I worked for Kelly for almost 5 years as a hearing specialist. She personally trained me how to test, fit and program. Also, on how to extend the life of those aids because some people just can’t afford to replace them.

I saw her continually go the extra mile for her clients to provide the best in service and in quality. Kelly also gives back to the community by donating her time at assisted living places by holding free hearing aid clinics for residents. Free cleaning, free exams and free consultations. If needed, repairs for a small fee. Kelly also sponsors activities for the residents.

If you are ever in Greenwood, Indiana … stop by and say hello and while you are there, get a free hearing exam!

Deafness Separates Us From People"
~ Helen Keller

  • Are You Having Trouble Hearing In Group Settings?
  • Having Difficulty On The Phone?
  • Do You Have To Turn Up The Volume On The TV?

You Are Not Alone

  • 20 percent of Americans, 48 million, report some degree of hearing loss.
  • At age 65, one out of three people suffer a hearing loss
  • Hearing loss is the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease.
  • Varying from mild to profound, gradual hearing loss can affect people of all ages. Hearing loss can be a sudden or gradual. "Depending on the cause, it can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent".
  • In older people unfortunately, a hearing loss can be often mistaken with, confused or even complicate, such conditions as dementia.
For most, the onset and progression of a hearing loss usually extends over some time

  • In adults, the most likely causes of hearing loss are noise and aging.
  • Presbycusis, an age-related hearing loss - is a change in the inner ear that happens as you get older and causes a slow but steady hearing loss. The loss may be mild or severe, and it is always permanent.
